Best Things to Do in Santorini

Best Things to Do in Santorini

Santorini rewards the curious traveller. Beyond the sunset photographs and caldera-view breakfasts, the island has a remarkable depth of experience — archaeological, culinary, geological, and natural.

1. Watch the Sunset in Oia

It's a cliché because it's true. The Oia sunset is one of the most spectacular natural spectacles in Europe. The sun descends toward the distant silhouette of Thirassia island and turns the caldera walls amber and rose. The castle ruins at the northern end of Oia fill with hundreds of people applauding the moment the sun disappears. To experience it without battling for space, arrive at your viewpoint 90 minutes before sunset and choose a spot slightly south of the main castle crowd — the caldera edge anywhere along Oia's main lane offers an equally breathtaking view.

2. Explore Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The Akrotiri excavations are one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. A Bronze Age city — contemporary with Minoan Crete — was buried and perfectly preserved by the volcanic eruption of around 1620 BC. The site is covered by a vast protective roof and you walk among multi-storey houses, intact storage jars, sophisticated plumbing, and the outlines of sophisticated frescoes (the originals are in the Athens National Archaeological Museum and Fira's Museum of Prehistoric Thera). Plan at least 90 minutes.

3. Go Wine Tasting at a Caldera Winery

Santorini's Assyrtiko wine is among the finest white wines produced in the Mediterranean — mineral, citrus-driven, and utterly unique to the volcanic terroir. A winery tasting with a caldera view is an essential Santorini experience. Our top recommendations: Santo Wines (for the view and the Vinsanto), Estate Argyros (for serious wine lovers), and Venetsanos (for the architecture). See our full winery guide for details.

4. Swim at Red Beach and Black Sand Beaches

Santorini's beaches are unlike any others in Greece — not golden sand, but volcanic black, red, and white pebbles, dramatic cliff walls, and deep-blue water. Red Beach (near Akrotiri) is the most dramatic — crimson volcanic rock towers above a small cove of dark pebbles. Perissa and Perivolos on the southeastern coast are the most accessible: long stretches of black sand backed by beach bars and seafood restaurants. Vlychada, near the southern tip, has an extraordinary lunar landscape of white pumice cliffs.

5. Sail Around the Caldera

Santorini's caldera — the submerged volcanic crater at the heart of the island — is best experienced from the water. Catamaran and sailing boat excursions depart from the Old Port at Fira and Ammoudi Bay below Oia. A typical half-day sailing trip visits the active volcano (Nea Kameni), the hot springs, Thirassia island, and anchor in a caldera bay for swimming. Private yacht charters are available for those who prefer a more exclusive experience. Your KC Travel driver can coordinate a pickup from Ammoudi Bay after an afternoon sail.

6. Visit Pyrgos and Profitis Ilias Monastery

Pyrgos, the island's highest village, is the most rewarding inland destination in Santorini. Its medieval kastro architecture, Byzantine churches, and absence of the caldera-edge tourist infrastructure give it an authenticity that the more famous villages have traded away. Drive to the summit of Profitis Ilias above Pyrgos for a 360° view of the entire island — on a clear day you can see Crete to the south. The monastery here has a functioning community and a small museum of religious art.

7. Take a Private Island Tour

With one day (or several) on the island, a private tour with KC Travel is the most efficient way to connect the experiences above. We can design a day that covers archaeological wonder, volcanic beaches, village exploration, and a winery visit — timed around the best light and crowd patterns, with a driver who knows every shortcut and every viewpoint. Contact us and tell us what matters most.
