Fira to Oia Hike: Route, Time, Tips and How to Get Back

The Fira to Oia hike is a roughly 10 km (6 mile) walk along the caldera rim that takes 3–5 hours. It is mostly downhill in this direction, passes through Firostefani and Imerovigli, and finishes in Oia. There is no shade after Imerovigli, so start early in the morning or in the late afternoon, carry plenty of water, and decide in advance how you will get back.
This is the best free thing to do in Santorini. You walk the edge of a flooded volcano, with the caldera on one side and the whole island laid out on the other, from Fira's busy streets to Oia's quiet end. It is not a technical hike, but it is long, exposed and surprisingly hilly in places. Here is how to do it well.
Staying in the south of the island or planning to end the day in Oia? You can book a drop-off at the start or a ride back from Oia at a fixed price.

The route, step by step
1. Fira to Firostefani (paved, easy)
Start on the caldera path at the northern edge of Fira and follow the walkway north. Within 20–30 minutes you are in Firostefani, with some of the best views back over Fira and the caldera. The Three Bells of Fira viewpoint is a popular photo stop along this stretch.
2. Firostefani to Imerovigli (paved, gentle climb)
The path climbs steadily to Imerovigli, the highest village on the caldera edge. This is your last reliable stop for water, snacks and toilets — fill up here.
3. Optional detour: Skaros Rock
Just below Imerovigli, Skaros Rock juts into the caldera. The detour down and back adds roughly 45–60 minutes and a steep climb back up. Worth it if you have the energy and start early; skip it on a hot afternoon.
4. Imerovigli to Oia (dirt trail, the real hike)
After Imerovigli the paving ends and the trail becomes rocky and open, rising and falling over the hills. You pass small chapels, including Profitis Ilias, with the caldera on your left and the east coast stretching away on your right. There is a short section along the road shoulder — walk carefully. The final stretch drops gently into Oia.
5. Arriving in Oia
You arrive at the quieter, eastern end of the village. From there it is a pleasant walk through the lanes to the castle ruins, the windmills and the main viewpoints. If you have timed it for the evening, you are in place for the sunset — see our Oia sunset guide.
When to do the hike
Season. Spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–October) are ideal: warm, clear and comfortable. In July and August, midday heat on the exposed trail is genuinely risky. Winter can be pleasant on a calm day, but wind on the ridge can be strong.
Time of day. Start early in the morning (by 8:00 in summer) to finish before the heat, or start in the late afternoon to arrive in Oia for sunset. If you choose the sunset option, do not plan to walk back — the trail is not lit.
What to bring
- At least 1.5–2 litres of water per person in warm months.
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen. There is almost no shade.
- Proper shoes: trainers or light hiking shoes with grip. The volcanic gravel is slippery; sandals are a common mistake.
- A light layer if you will be in Oia for sunset.
- Snacks, a charged phone and some cash.
- A small bag only. You will carry it for hours.

How to get to the start and back from Oia
This is the part to plan before you lace up, because you finish 10 km from where you started.
Getting to the start in Fira
If you are staying in Fira, Firostefani or Imerovigli, simply walk to the caldera path. From elsewhere on the island, take the KTEL bus to Fira or arrange a drop-off at the start — especially for an early-morning start, when buses from the south of the island may not get you there in time.
Getting back from Oia
- KTEL bus: buses run between Oia and Fira, roughly every 30 minutes in summer, with a fare of €2.20 each way in the 2026 season. In the late afternoon and straight after sunset the queue at Oia bus station can be long. Check the posted timetable for the last bus.
- Taxi: possible, but availability in Oia is unpredictable, especially in peak season and around sunset.
- Pre-booked private transfer: a driver meets you at an agreed pickup point at the edge of Oia (cars cannot enter the village lanes) at your chosen time. After 3–5 hours on your feet, it is the easiest way back — and the most reliable if you are staying in the south of the island or finishing after sunset. See our guide to Oia to Fira transfer options.
Tip: if you are not sure how long you will take, choose a pickup time with a buffer and send your driver a message when you reach Imerovigli.
Can you do the hike in reverse, from Oia to Fira?
Yes, but it is mostly uphill, the views are behind you for much of the way, and you finish in busy Fira rather than at Oia's sunset. Oia to Fira works well as a morning walk if you are staying in Oia and want to end with lunch in Fira.
Is the Fira to Oia hike right for you?
It suits most reasonably fit walkers, including active teenagers. It is less suitable for young children, anyone with knee problems on rough descents, or people with limited mobility. If the full route is too much, walk the easy paved section from Fira to Imerovigli (about 1–1.5 hours) and see the rest of the caldera villages on a private tour instead.
How to book your drop-off or ride back
- Choose your route and time — a drop-off in Fira before you start, a pickup in Oia when you finish, or both.
- Get a fixed price before you book.
- Meet your driver at the agreed point and rest your legs.
