Top Villages and Attractions in Santorini

Most visitors to Santorini see Oia and Fira. The island's real character lives in Pyrgos, Emporio, Megalochori, and Akrotiri. Here's your guide to going beyond the postcard.
Oia: The World-Famous Caldera Village
No list of Santorini's villages can begin anywhere else. Oia sits at the northern tip of the island, draped in the iconic white-washed architecture and blue-domed churches that have made Santorini synonymous with the Greek islands. The caldera path through the village is one of the most photographed walks in the world.
Beyond the Instagram angle: Oia has excellent independent art galleries, exceptional jewellers, and some of Santorini's best fine-dining restaurants. The Byzantine Castle ruins at the northern tip are the epicentre of the world-famous sunset ritual — arrive at least an hour early in summer. The village is entirely pedestrianised, which means your private transfer drops you at the village entrance and the rest is explored on foot.
Fira: The Island's Capital
Fira is the administrative centre of Santorini — busier and more commercial than Oia, but with its own caldera edge drama. The town hangs on the western cliffs and connects to the Old Port below via the famous cable car (or the 580-step donkey path, if you're feeling athletic). The Museum of Prehistoric Thera here has some of the finest Bronze Age artefacts in Greece, including extraordinary frescoes from the Akrotiri excavations. Fira is also the best base for restaurants, bars, and the KTEL bus network.
Imerovigli: The Balcony of Santorini
Between Fira and Oia, Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera rim — 300 metres above the sea. It's quieter and less visited than its famous neighbours but arguably has the most breathtaking caldera perspective of all. The Skaros Rock promontory juts into the caldera here — a 45-minute walk leads to the tip where you're surrounded on three sides by deep blue water and the submerged volcano. At sunset, the light on Oia from Imerovigli is extraordinary.
Pyrgos: The Medieval Hilltop Village
Pyrgos is arguably the most architecturally interesting village in Santorini. Built as a series of concentric defensive rings around a Venetian-era kastro (castle), it rises to a crown of white churches at its summit. It's the highest village on the island and offers 360° views. Several excellent wineries are nearby (including Santo Wines, just below the ridge), and the Monastery of Profitis Ilias on the summit above Pyrgos is one of Santorini's oldest functioning religious buildings, with a small museum of ecclesiastical art.
Emporio and Megalochori: Authentic Santorini
Emporio in the south is Santorini's largest traditional village and the least touristy. Its labyrinthine alleys were designed to confuse pirates — even today it's easy to lose yourself in the warren of vaulted passages and hidden courtyards. The church of Timios Stavros at the top of the village is a quiet, beautiful contrast to the caldera spectacle. Megalochori nearby is a living wine village with two excellent wineries (Venetsanos and Gavalas) and a genuinely local atmosphere in its central square.
Akrotiri: The Prehistoric City
The archaeological site of Akrotiri at the southern tip of the island is Santorini's greatest cultural treasure. A Bronze Age Minoan settlement buried — and perfectly preserved — by the volcanic eruption of approximately 1620 BC, it has been compared to Pompeii in its completeness. Multi-storey houses with intact frescoes, sophisticated drainage systems, and evidence of a highly civilised trading culture make this a remarkable site. Open year-round (check current hours). Entry approximately €12. A licensed guide is highly recommended.
The Best Way to See Santorini's Villages
Renting a car or ATV to explore independently is common — but the roads between villages are narrow, parking is almost non-existent near the major caldera villages, and the routes can be confusing. A private island tour with KC Travel lets you visit three or four villages in a day at your own pace, with a driver who knows exactly where to stop and how long you'll want to stay. We regularly combine Pyrgos + Megalochori winery + Emporio + Akrotiri into a single, beautifully timed day.
